No, it's not from outer space. Although this set up looks like from some mystical galaxy, this is a Belemnite, a creature that could only be from Earth (until there's significant proof of life elsewhere, ofcourse!). .
Belemnites belong to an extinct order of squid-like marine animals. In one of my favorite sci-fi novels 'Sphere', the author paints a picture of absolute terror with squids slowly passing by the research submarine, signifying the entry of an invisible alien. Reading this at a very young age surely leaves a mark. Just to get over that fear of underwater creatures, I had to pour over countless articles studying these animals. What I found is that though I am quite interested and comfortable around them now, we have but got to respect their evolutionary dominance and their ability to kill us in various different ways. ❤️
Having recently been delighted to find that my collection of fossils included this tiny beauty, I thought it would be the perfect time to share what fossils are and how they are actually formed. .
A fossil, by definition, is the preserved remains, traces of remains or an imprint of a dead organism. Fossils can vary in size from microscopic (like pollen or bacteria) to macroscopic (like trees or dinosaur bones).
To be clear, a fossil is not the organism itself. It is only rock. Soft tissue of the organism decomposes fast and the rest turns into a fossil. Well.....it's a bit more complicated than this. So, check out my next post on fossils for a detailed scoop on how fossils actually form. .
Sue, the T-rex fossil skeleton, was sold for a whooping $8.3 Million making it the costliest dinosaur fossil.
Can't even picture that amount money but if it was for a fossil, I get it. I totally get it. .
