Flowers grow out of dark moments
It's disheartening to see the current state of this country I call home. In no way is America perfect. And maybe I was naive to think we had evolved beyond the color of our skin.
As an Asian American, I realized we are privileged and cursed with the model minority. I've never felt unsafe jogging in my neighborhood. I don't worry about being pulled over or shot on the basis of my skin color. But with COVID-19, I've had brief moments of fear and racism. Asians were being targeted for eating bats and causing the pandemic. Anti-Asian racism and xenophobia are very real in America. Don't forget, we were targeted less than a month ago.
But through all this adversity, I do believe we will evolve and grow beyond all this hatred and racism. I’m celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month to embrace my Cambodian roots that gave me melatonin. Let’s all learn to embrace varying levels of melanin and learn to be decent human beings again.
